bonjour ~

Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.

Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD

Banning of Ashley Madison and more...
written on Monday, 20 April 2015 @ 07:23 ✈

I'm currently revising for my media and culture finals, and here are some of my thoughts which i will continue to update throughout my revision:

1. Ashley Madison - Life is Short. Have an affair.

Are we justified to ban Ashely Madison? Sure, its against our conservative values and Asian culture, and also against public interest to promote flagrant disregard of the family, but we're assuming that audiences are passive creatures that would pounce into the site at any given available chance.

I tried to go to the site but yea its banned. This ban is a symbolic statement of the types of content that the community is opposed to. But it's Facebook page is not banned, so i went there to take a look. They had a video of the founder, Noel Biderman, talking about why he set up this company. I kind of think that what he says makes sense when i try to think from his perspective. He says that the most important factors in a family concerning marriage would be their family, kids, career (income), and sex would probably be on the fourth or fifth most important factor. Ashley Madison seeks to fulfil the sexual desires and 'passion' that died off in the marriage, though you still very much love the man/woman. In a sense, he is arguing that having extra-marital affairs can help to sustain your marriage, for it can reduce the compounding negative emotions and stress from the lack of sex which may explode and affect the more important factors. (lolz)

I think if you don't have the sexual desire for another person, or the thought of having an extra-marital affair in the first place, you wouldn't even go to the website, thus the website shouldn't be banned. By banning, it's kind of restraining our freedom of choice.

But the dominant culture is the one that always sets and reinforces the social norms. The dominant discourse here is that it would distract and encourage people to commit adultery. (I really think that wouldn't be possible if there weren't for gaps in your marriage in the first place. Banning does not solve this root problem.) Despite knowing that we are active agents who won't 'stupidly commit adultery' cos it's just a click away, we still wanna ban it cos we want to prevent this at all costs, "minimise the possibility ma"...but actually there are plenty of these kinda sites..just that this one is more popz and international la.
