Liar Game
written on Sunday, 7 December 2014 @ 01:35 ✈

Everyone wears a mask. Good, evil, compassion, conscience, justice. Names of these masks. From time to time, we mistake those masks to be our real selves. But here, without any exception, we take off all those masks. Your true self, looking at this money… what would it be?” -Kang Do Young

Recently got to know of this drama, called the "Liar Game"!

Its plot is darn cool!! No love story, but many mind-blowing mind games. The whole drama is driven by the conflicting views of human nature, psychology and algorithms, and of course protagonist's Da Jung's trust in Ha Woo Jin, the youngest psychologist professor in Korea. (who is also a human lie detector.) He is extremely observant and skilled in reading micro expressions. He was jailed for stock manipulation causing the bankruptcy of a company, which he did so in revenge for his mother who was cheated and committed suicide.

Da Jung, along with many other people, got selected as candidates to participate in the liar game. She initially participated in order to return her father's debts, and in hope that her father will return.

"Liar game", as the name suggests, is a game where you'd trick your opponents to win, or end up in debt if you lose. It thrives in selfishness and greed. The only way to win it, is ultimately to trust each other. Just one betrayal would cause the whole alliance to fall apart and many to land up in debts.

How far would you go to trust a person?

My fave quotes from the drama :)

Is trusting a person so wrong? -Da Jung

"There is no reason on why I trust other person. It's just I want to trust them. Even if I got betrayed, maintaining the trust isn't a credit. It's faith." -Da Jung.

“In order to trust, you must suspect first” -Ha Woo Jin-

There are many quotes i like in this drama!! It greatly enhanced my interest in psychology. They quoted from famous psychologists, like alder and skinner. The show's antagonist, Kang Do young, was a child experiment by B.F.Skinner in his "Walden Two" Project. He came up with this "liar game" initially to save the broadcast company, which he did as the ratings soared and the stocks rose. But this game was so dirty in a way you could see the the extreme sides of human nature. How people control money---no, how money controlled people. And how the good will eventually win, through trust and compassion, as shown by protagonist Da jung.

I think everyone should read up bit on psychology, because you really understand more about yourself and other people. Do take PL1101E if you get the chance. Not for the grades, but for the interesting insight into human behaviour.

Anyway i highly recommend this drama! You can watch it at dramacool.com :)

The original version was from a japanese manga which was then developed into a 2 season drama series and 2 movies. Korea adapted it by adding in another important element: making it a game show, portraying it on the media. The Japanese version did the game as if it was "real life", not on broadcast.

I like the korean version cos its more high tech, since its filmed more recently so the equipment and game style had a tech upgrade from the jap version! Eg. using smart phones and cool gadgets vs postcards and ballot slips.

I started off watching the jap version first cos i found it easily on YT. IMO both are really good, the plot is slightly different and so are some of the games. I watched both the kor and jap version simultaneously and i wasn't bored. Okay maybe abit cos i could predict some of the games.

But the korean version added a lot more twist, plot and capitalised more on character development more than the jap version. In the end of S1 for the Jap ver, it was shown that an old (rich) man wanted to find salvation & hope in someone (Nao Kanzaki) who in this world, could trust someone wholeheartedly, and moved people to do so as well. And therefore he created this game. #FaithInHumanityRestored. Weirdo old man though. Seems sane but i don't think he is ._. However, the korean ver. says that the creator of this game, Kang Do Young was a failed human experiment by Skinner, and there are many like him too, out to show the dark side of humanity, -but as he said, he was a failed experiment, so he did own up to his crimes in the end, and urges Woo Jin to stop them from manipulating humans and causing chaos.

It also shows the stark contrast between the japanese and korean culture! (The mannerisms and tone of the characters) Which made it really interesting to watch since i took jap studies this sem haha.

Both series are relatively short. Korean one has 12 eps, so do catch it! (50mins/ep)

I'm down to the last ep of season 1 of the jap ver, ep 11. (40mins/ep)
But the last ep is a whooping 3 HOURS! (I guess it shows how popular it was, so popular they had to make a 3hr blockbuster for the last ep. )

Byeee i'm off to watch the last ep!!!

//edit, turns out that 90% of that 3hrs was a recap of the previous episodes lols, so i skipped quite alot!
