bonjour ~

Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.

Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD

Semester 2!!
written on Thursday, 15 January 2015 @ 07:44 ✈

Time flies, and i'm finally into my second sem!

Time to mug again, and find study buddies ^^

Monday's my free day. :D We had the sociology bazaar held over 3 days, tues to thurs! I practically camped at CF over the 3 days lols, its nice to have a constant hangout in uni! Really HARD to meet up with your friends, even though we're the same major, let alone same faculty :/

First day was sooo busy, we walked to the soci honours room and back like 5 times!? And there were some last min set-ups we had to do. But it was fun! The 2nd day was damn boring though.. anw we finally ended our bazaar! Not a really successful outreach though :/ Many things we could improve on! :)

I hope in this semester, i'll be able to be ahead in my readings. I'll do a summary for every reading & revise the lecture at the end of the day again. I hope i'll be able to grow closer to my friends, and meet nice new peeps too! Its really much more fun to attend lectures with your friends, esp if the lecturer is 'boring' HAHA. Cheers to a fruitful and happy sem!! :)

Lots of preparation for soci camp..and i'm not ready. I don't really have any amazing ideas. Hope i can think of some good ones soon..hmmm. People who are reading this, if you have any suggestions, or something that you think could've been done to make your camp (any camp) better, tell me!! I love random WA messages hahaha.

Haven given a good thought on this yet because i didn't set a time to pen my thoughts down..so i shall do it now haha

As a freshie, what do i want out of sociology camp??

I think the manifest functions would be to:

1. make more friends (so that they can hang out at lectures together, etc)
2. to know more about NUS, the bus & SUPPER routes and where the LTs & faculties are (so that they won't get lost)
3. and hopefully understand a lil' of what soci is about! (I really wanted this HAHA, but soci camp didn't cover this. [But i still don't quite get soci at this stage too] Takes some time i guess #stillfreshie #sostillgottime)

And perhaps the latent functions would be:

1. meet seniors and understand the complex bidding process, and good modules to take
2. Publicity for sociology society (so that they would join us/ become OGLs the following year)

To attract freshies, its important to let them know what we do. Hence we'll be including a segment to introduce our society and our activities.

Incorporating sociology into games isn't easy.. and our tight budget isn't making it any easier sigh.

We were thinking of using movie themes and look up the sociological analysis of movies to apply in our camp. Wreck-it ralph??

I realised that Korea is moving towards those mind games & algorithm, psychology games, so we'll probably incorporate a few of those in too.

Perhaps we can incorporate sociology ideas that are more relatable to layman. I think its easy to get someone interested in sociology, afterall, don't you want to know how your society affects you? Objectively, everything you see may be a social construct..definitions are almost always used subjectively..how do you define "stress"? Different people define it differently, we have different sources and degrees of stress, but we all get that moment when you are so stressed and want to pull you hair out HAHA and we define it objectively that way.

Back to what i mention in the first sentence in the prev para, concepts such as media and gender and perhaps even medical sociology can be used!! (Haha i'm taking these 3 mods this sem lolz)

On a side note //Coldplay playlist is damn good for studying and blogging HAHA//

Anyway, recently i had this assignment regarding the application of the ritual model on the Charlie Hebdo incident. For my media and culture lect! (Ikr week1 onlyy, but its a good warm up!)

So what's my take on this?

3.7 million people have done the Charlie Hebdo March, but some say "I am NOT Charlie."

I don't fully agree with the cartoons published in Charlie Hebdo, but i condemn the actions of the terrorists even more. What right do they have to take away someone's life, just because they find them racist? "This defies the Freedom of Speech," which is the main reason why many did the March. However, since Charlie Hebdo is "so racist", many people are against it as well, especially the muslim population in France.

Contrary to 'popular' belief, Charlie Hebdo is NOT racist.

Racist. But what exactly is race anyway?

What makes you a Chinese? Chinese features? Oh then what if you're born in America, and brought up in the western culture? A chinese-looking American? Or a Chinese American? Or American Chinese? Does the former matter more or the latter? Does not-speaking chinese make you less chinese? Look at singaporean kids these days who dislike chinese..so they have less chinese blood?

Race, like anything social, is subjective to your culture. If you say Charlie Hebdo is racist, aren't you being ethnocentric? Perhaps you are the racist one here?

So to understand what is going on, you'd first have to look at France's satirical history, culture & politics, and show a lil' cultural relativity.

Quoting from vox.com,
"That's what's tricky about two-layer satire like Charlie Hebdo's: the joke only works if you see both layers, which often requires conversant knowledge of French politics or culture. If you don't see that layer, then the covers can seem to say something very different and very racist."
This is why personally, i don't really get what the Satires mean too, exactly. I get a little of the mocking towards Prophet Mohammed and perhaps criticism towards some politicians, but not completely. Maybe i'll ask my friends who are taking French to decipher for me hahaha

Anyway, until i reach a certain understanding of french culture, i shall be a more relativist here and so JE SUIS CHARLIE.

This link sent to me by a friend is pretty good! http://ennea.tumblr.com/post/108094076796

This is another interesting excerpt i found while googling: How JE SUIS CHARLIE is so effectively spreading around the world-
"The construction of [an 'I am'] chant is so effective exactly because it's both personal and political, both individualistic and collectivistic," says Nathan Jurgenson, a social-media theorist and sociologist. "I think that's a big reason why these movements are able to explode in social media, because instead of those two impulses being in conflict, they work together."

// Its gonna be a long day tmr! I got a FMA!! Needa finish my write-up and readings! JIAYOU EVERYONE!

Cheers to a busy but fulfilling sem!
