bonjour ~

Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.

Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD

Paris, Lebanon attacks.
written on Sunday, 15 November 2015 @ 04:51 ✈

I think this is a worthy issue of my time though its the finals period. (It might possibly help?)

The media controls our minds. Whoever holds power over the media, frames our perspectives and judgments. What happens if we don't know? I think we have avoided this issue long enough.

The Paris and Lebanon attacks goes to show, once again, the dominance of the American Media. Login to Facebook today and you see people changing their profile pictures to a 'paris filter' to show solidarity and spread social awareness about such inhumane attacks.

"There aren't many things we can do to help, changing our profile picture is the least we can do."

I am honestly fine with that, but this really got me interested in the function of media as a conduit, particularly as a barrier that safely allows us to perform these acts. The media shows us that hey, this is a way you can help them. Just by changing your profile picture. Don't you wonder if they really understand the meanings behind this filter?

The rise of new social movements brought about by increased social media usage has brought about great changes - pink dot, purple parade, ice bucket challenge, yellow umbrella protests - no doubt has garnered support and solidarity for the minority and unnoticed.

My mind is fucked up - all these thoughts are jumping in at the same time..albeit distinct at parts.

1. What i'm afraid is that people may think, "this is all i can do, i stop here." Are this initial signs of slactivism? This is a problem.

2. What i'm afraid is that people may think, "this is the 'in' thing, everyone's changing their profile pic so hey i should do it too" A conformity bias?

3. We need to educate people, that we do see bits and pieces of such problems everywhere, that this is a problem for humanity as a whole. Not just Paris. Not just Lebanon.

4. We need to understand that, the American Media has been dominant - we do not see the reports in Lebanon till it hit Paris. And many other social issues. And even if we do, it's from the American Perspective. Where are the other media channels? Or rather, have most of us already subconsciously subscribe to the Western superiority? Where are you getting your news from? This is more than a political issue.

5. I see 2 divides between Muslims. Muslims who do not identify themselves with ISIS for they are terrorists, and Muslims who acknowledge that ISIS are Muslims, but at a different spectrum. So i think first, we should acknowledge that. Because ISIS is a Muslim organisation. Just that their ideals are subjectively interpreted in a irrevocably twisted manner. So it boils down to whether Muslims admit if it's a religious problem or not. Which i do see it as one, because

To address 1: If you really want to help, a quick google will probably get you this - and if you really really want to help, go do some detailed research. Just like how you wanna buy a car. Haha, but yea like as if the layman will do that. I don't know. He might. But we are in a capitalist system which does not encourage this behaviour so..you can prove me wrong ;p

At least 129 people were killed in six terrorist attacks in Paris Friday night. Here are some ways you can help:
Donate to local French charities, Secours Catholique-Caritas France and the French Secours Populaire, which both provide aid during emergencies in the country.
In the U.S. people are offering their homes to French nationals stranded after France’s borders closed and many flights were delayed with the social media hashtag #strandedinUS. In Paris, Parisians are opening their homes to those in need with the hashtag #PorteOuverte.

But an interesting discourse has unfolded.
