Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.
Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD
I still remember the time when I hesitated to join this
OCIP. After learning about volun-tourism in FMA, my friends and I were quite skeptical about
OCIPs. Do they really help the beneficiaries?Met up with some of them today and I was faced with that same question. But I can
cough up a somewhat better answer now.
Taken at the beach near the school at Tanpiew Village :)
These kind of decisions aren’t 100% set. Its more like
40%-60% and you see which side you lean towards more. It's never fully rational. Initially, I wanted to have an overseas experience more than helping people. I don’t know if my presence
could actually help the people there, but I trusted my PDs, and I did what I could.
Still, my conscience was bugging me. After learning abit on effective altruism in philosophy, I knew I wasn’t making the best choice. It meant that I have to
research on all possible OCIPs and find out the one that was the most
beneficial. But I went ahead with this because it was a music-themed OCIP, and I
loved making music. It was that that made me step out and become who I want to
be. I played the guitar almost everyday in the village, and the kids would
crowd around me, being attentive audiences, smiling and singing along at times. Missing those moments )':
I didn’t know anyone on the team when I first joined. But that didn’t really hindered me from joining cos I knew we’d all bond through our CIPs. Most importantly, we all really love music!
Waves of Change'15 OCIP Team! Love y'all haha :3
13 Dec 2015 (SG-VIETNAM)
Wrappin' em boxes
We met around 10am at the airport to finish wrapping the boxes of donations. Flight was at 1pm but...it got delayed till 5pm.
The journey wasn’t smooth. We had many hiccups – our flight was delayed, had a one-night stay in Vietnam (which we were all secretly happy about hehe - 4 star hotel, good food, some exploring woots ^^ ), and we met with further delays in Laos. There were some admin issues so our trip to the village got delayed. 14 Dec 2015 (VIETNAM, HO CHI MINH)
We had one night stay in Ramana Hotel in Ho Chin Minh, and we did some shopping there as well. My first time in Vietnam!
Ma roomie! Na pa~ (Her Laos name)
15 Dec 2015 (VIETNAM-LAOS)
Wattay International Airport, Laos
FINALLY getting to Laos. Visited the night market to get our elephant pants, and treated ourselves to some street-side snacks (scroll all the way for food section) Did some more shopping for our materials around Vientiane.
Meeting Hand in hand, our Laos counterpart
And i also reapplied for exchange but i didn't get it sobs. But I know a better one is waiting for me (moon face) #positivity:D
16 Dec 2015 (VIENTIANE-TANPIEW VILLAGE)
We were transported by a boat (this was taken in the van) across the river. (3pm)
Gabu gabu gabu!! *turkey gobbles* It survived X'mas. :P
Played with the kids for awhile before heading to the fields
Oh! Nam was one of the first kids we met too
Down we go... ! (5pm)
We took ages and that's probably why the kid is frowning -
"why these ppl so slow one keep blocking my way"
Yay-we-finally-made-it picture
Let's head down to the river
Many kids tagged along! Tried stone skipping but failed miserably
Cheeeese
We had to cook a meal (lucky it was the only meal we needed to cook HAHA) for our village host! Kinda like a cultural ceremony thingy. We tried our best, food was delicious though we took abit too long hahaha. We cooked eggs with tomato, meatballs, mushrooms...and lots of eggs LOL
Chen chen, Alisa, Rita, Na pa, Xiao Ken cookin'
I'm cooking too cos the kitchen can't survive without me KIDDING
(I think i added water when cooking mushrooms forgetting that it will chu shui)
Let's eat!
As the night slips in, we were greeted by the shivering cold temperatures. It gets as low as 14 deg at night! I only brought a thin cardi along. Luckily the villagers provided blankets and pillows for us! And super thankful for Chen Si's sweater!! <3
Thank you grandma for hosting us!!
17 Dec 2015 (1st visit to Tanpiew Primary School)

They always spoke to us in Lao but we don't understand - we can only nod our heads and smile haha. Glad to have Liang ying, Kenneth and Vin on my team - a really dependable and cheerful buncha peeps. (Except when u are drunk LY HAHA otherwise you're our MVP) Frankly i get exhausted quite easily dealing with such a big group of children. I'm glad you guys could handle the class when i was tired. I liked it when we had chill mass drawing sessions towards the end of the lessons hehe. I liked drawing for the kids, but i hope that they will try drawing for themselves too instead to shoving me the paper one after another LOL. So thankful that the kids are pretty guai and giving their best in their artworks.

I'm wearing the lao-ish shirts/pants everyday (that i wore in laos) because i want to feel like i'm still in Laos haha. Missing those times. Looking at their school, and their faces when we bid goodbye, i hoped knew we had made a change in their lives. It's something that can't be put into words, and something that you don't need words to express. You can tell through the expressions on their faces. Though we spoke different languages, we could feel one another - eyes are windows to another's soul.
Though it was a short 2 weeks trip, i'm glad that we have made happy memories. I remembered being stressed out by the lack of proper planning - but you know what - plans always change, and we adapted pretty well.
I learnt that you don't always need to have everything mapped out - just go with the flow and adapt to changes when need be.
I learnt that one finds true happiness in helping people, and having the heart to empathize and care for another is just so beautiful.
I learnt that everyone's unique in their own special way, and we're often too hard on ourselves, take it easy, people will accept you for who you are.
I learnt to always be thankful for everything, though it may be abit excessive at times, but it always feel good when you let the other person know you appreciate them.
I learn to just speak my mind and not hold back, though i still do sometimes.. it takes time.
I learned that asking personal questions are not as invasive as it seems, more often than not, the person would be more than willing to share.
I learn that everyone has a weakness, a side that they don't want to tell people, but we all accept it regardless.
I learn that having a team to rely on can be so comforting, knowing that they've got your back.
I learn that being true to yourself is important, so be yourself.
Dedication to Fa Sai my fave kid haha :3
We followed Fa Sai back to her
house one day, and she was a really great host! We tried talking on google
translate but failed. Why samsung keypad no lao! :( The next day Fa Sai invited
us along with wen lin, Vi and alisa and this was one of the many pics we took.
I lovee Fa Sai alot cos she really tried so hard to communicate with us in
english; she has a notebook where she took down lao-eng translations. She tried
teaching me lao but i sucked at it hehe😅 I translated our lao names and some
words to eng and she was so happy that she could used that to communicate with
us. You can see the happiness and (exaggerated) disappointed expressions on her
face when i didnt get what she was saying..and she'll shake her head, pout and
go "Oh no no no no" waggin her finger hahaha.😂 One of those moments
you can't capture but i'll remember it as best as i can. 🙆
(idk why its CAPs so burden, tried changing but failed)

Sometimes I wonder how people see me and what they think of me. It scares me a bit, honestly. I am sure though, that what they think of me,
what they think my life is, is a complete misperception. I have always tried to show myself as a carefree person, as someone who wont get bothered
because of public judgements. I am sure my friend and family think there is nothing going wrong in my life, that I do not worry enough, that
I am always happy. And I am sure they probably somewhat hate me for it because, lets admit it, there is nothing worse than seeing someone
who is life seems so perfect while yours is a complete mess. Truth is, I have become an expert at pretending. I think we are all experts
or at least we are getting there.
