bonjour ~

Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.

Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD

Summer break is ending too soon )':

As usual, i'm doing my Module Reviews during the Bidding Season. Hope it helps!

You can refer to previous sem's reviews here: http://mylittlememoriez.blogspot.sg/2014/12/ay20142015-freshie-sem1-review.html

I covered SC1101E, PL1101E, JS1101E, LSM1301 & GEK1900 in my previous semester.

This sem, i took SC2211, SC2220, SC2214, PH1102E, FMA1201P.

Major: Sociology
Minor: Either Public Health or Health & Social Sciences

SC2211 Medical Sociology

SC2211 was taught by A/P Paulin Straughan and a female korean professor (i forgot her name..)
I like Paulin's lectures - she's very engaging and passionate, and it makes the content easily digestible. I think the scope is rather standard, and you can easily refer to past year papers for certain trends..BUT you never know when they will give out-of-the box questions. There was a diagram in my Final Exam, which they have never given before in previous years.

The other prof was pretty good too, even though she's a little monotonous. She focuses more on Quantitative area in Medical Sociology, so her lectures are quite stats-based. She explains the concepts very clearly as well. I highly recommend this module to all, esp Sociology Majors. It's not very heavy, readings are relativley shorter than other Soci modules, and are really interesting (except for those on stats...you can skip the sciency bits, its an ARTS module heehee).

There was a field trip to Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital which I found really insightful. The tour showcased the latest innovative technologies that hospitals use, as well as the planning behind the infrastructures and designs.

TIPS: Practice your essays beforehand! They drop hints as well, so focus smartly! It's an open book exam, so use that to your advantage! I did essays before and i copied and paste the whole chunk in cos it pretty much matched the question HAHA.

Grade: A

SC2220 Gender Studies

SC2220 was taught by Prof Eric Thompson. He came up with some of the theories, such as the Sexual Exchange Theory - which you can find it here: http://sc2220.wikifoundry.com/ . Most of the content of the lectures can be found in the wiki website as well. He kinda loves using wiki pages haha. Some of my friends like his lecture style, i find him pretty alright. He likes to tell stories, and the concepts aren't hard to understand, content is pretty manageable as well. There are some interesting readings, which are quite heavily tested in Finals, so make sure you know them. My tutor however, was pretty lenient..hence our grades got moderated down..I scored mostly As for my CAs and Project, but i got a B+ overall. Then again, i might have screwed up my finals..which i thought i did okay..need some feedback from my tutor hmmz. There was a pretty wide range of students from different majors so you will have a diverse choice of groupmates. (Which can be good in terms of offering different perspectives..but may lack in Sociological concepts)

TIPS: Summarising the theories would be pretty useful (like, for all modules generally LOL). Final Questions pretty standard as well, but the scope is huge. I think examples from readings and real time news would give you an A, built upon solid explanatory theories. This Prof teaches Anthro as well..so if you're the Anthro kinda person, take it!

Grade: B+

SC2214 Media and Culture

SC2214 is taught by Prof Ivan Kwek. Media and Culture is so diffused, its all around us and so it's pretty hard to narrow the scopes to fit the lecture. Its so normalised and i found it hard to unpack the content with the theories we learn. The lecture, in my opinion, is not as well structured compared to the 2 above, but this could be due to the nature of the subject as well..

It was pretty confusing at first, but it gets better after you apply the theories through projects. I had only 3 members and it was pretty rushed. Had mostly Bs so i expected a B..I wouldn't really recommend this module as I find that there are much better modules around for you to take..

Grade: B

PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy

One of my favourite modules that i have a love-hate relationship with. I like the concepts covered, such as Hedonism, utilitarianism etc, and the tutorial classes encourage you to think deeply. The bell-curve is really steep. You'd have to score for all assignments (8 and above) and finals to get an A. Final was quite easy as long as you memorise the thinkers and understand their arguments. The weekly summaries were the ones that pulled me down..i scored an average of 6/10. They used to exclude lecture readings from finals (only testing lecture), but are increasingly including those concepts. So for future batches..you have more work to do..

TIPS: Understand where the arguments are coming from, you can debate among your friends as well. Helps in memorising and understanding.

Grade: B

FMA1201P Meanings and Leanings

Led by Prof Rosaleen Ow, this FMA is student-run and 2 students present each week. We can choose from a wide range of topics from philosophy, life and death, influence of the social media, charity and altruism and any controversial topics! There are weekly reflections and a final grand reflection you have to do, and that's about it. Doing the reflections were enjoyable as it's about your own thoughts and views. I wasn't very vocal during tutorials so it pulled down my class participation marks. Nevertheless i'd encourage all students, esp the more extroverted ones to take this module! :))

Grade: B+

Rather short review cos i'm still at work haha. If y'all have any queries, just comment below! I'll try to reply asap. :)
