bonjour ~

Hey there! I just changed my blogskin :) It's a little user-unfriendly because you can't navigate my past posts by headings or hashtags. So i'm gonna update the codings, stay tuned! (The font's kinda hard to read too..other than these 3 peeves, i'm quite satisfied) Follow me on the links below! :) 29/4/2015.

Started this blog during the last few weeks of SEM1(AY2014/15) cos' i regained interest in blogging. I blog about anything - news, social issues, music - but mostly about my university life :) Hope my posts will help you to make better life (and module) choices! Currently a Sociology Major. Still fresh. xD

Y2S2 Review!
written on Wednesday, 1 June 2016 @ 08:06 ✈

Time flies, i'm gonna be a senior in school next sem. Can you believe it!?!?!
My youth was spent in socisoc...hahaha

I shall do a quick review of the mods i took this sem, hope it helps y'all!
My CAP increased a lil this sem, phew. I think cos i took my mods pretty strategically haha. It was a cray sem haha i was doing 2 other research projects and SOCIP as well. BUT I LOVED IT FAVE SEM SO FAR HAHAHA

[AY 2015/16 SEM 2]
SC2212 Sociology of Deviance (Prof Ganapathy)
SC3216 Self and Society (Prof Ho Swee Lin)
SC3217 Ethnographic Analysis of Visual Media (Prof Ivan Kwek)
NM3217 Design in Strategic Communications (Prof Aaron)
GEK1054 Music in Global Context (I forgot hahaha)

SC2212 Sociology of Deviance (Prof Ganapathy)
Workload: 30% - Group/Individual Project; 60% - Finals; 10% Class participation
Content: The theories covered ranged from classical to functionalist, symbolic interactionist and marxist. Prof Gana always brings in examples to relate to the theories, which helps you to support your argument better. I liked the flexibility in choosing the topic for the project. Together with my groupmate, we interviewed social workers at Boystown to find out more about restorative justice models in Singapore. I learnt alot! I scored A for the project but got B+ in the end, haha kinda disappointing but i guess i didn't do very well for finals. I fumbled in the 1st question - pay attention to lectures, he gives teeny hints - but haha i'm satisfied with B+.

SC3216 Self and Society (Prof Ho Swee Lin)
Workload: Pretty heavy. Many readings, but you don't need to know all. Weekly summaries and a group presentation, and an essay assignment and finals.
Content: My fave mod this sem! Though her lecture style might seem intimidating but it really pushes you to think critically and examine the social forces that shape social phenomenons around us. This is an anthropology module, meaning her arguments are grounded in a particular social context presented in the case studies. My 1st anthro mod, but i love it cos the readings transport you to another time and space, and give such layered analysis - it's a joy to read. I really wished i had time to read all of them but i didn't. Gave up reading the readings after recess week. Thought i'd die in the essay cos i brainstormed in less than a week, and did it the day before but i did decent...got a B+ for finals, wew i am happy :D The key is to understand a few readings deeply and draw examples to support your argument.

SC3217 Ethnographic Analysis of Visual Media (Prof Ivan Kwek)
Workload: Pretty heavy as well, we had 3 indiv assignments and a group project. It may seem heavy but it's easy haha, cos Prof Ivan is kind. HAHAHA hmm it's just his marking style i feel. Open book finals.
Content: The module that assures sociology undergrads that someone will actually hire them. HAHA there are companies that employ ethnographic research into marketing, to understand how people of a different culture use similar products. From there, the make tweaks in the design and publicity. The most applicable mod ever, because after Prof Ivan taught us Auto-drive photo elicitation, i have been using it everywhere - for my current HDB internship and SOCIP, yup i am over using it a little but i think it's like a really versatile and interesting tool that opens up alot of platforms and opportunities.

The gist of this module is about how the visual is employed in ethnography, so ethnographic theories are covered as well, debates on how to capture a visual - and ultimately recognising the ethnographer as an instrument of knowledge where knowledge produced is different when another ethnographer does ethnography in the same place. Don't get tricked - there is no such thing as a knowledge produced being more superior than the other.

I got A for this YIPPEE haha.

NM3217 Design in Strategic Communications (Prof Aaron)
Workload: Intense - design a flyer, brochure and website, along with organisation research. And a quiz.
Content: Really dry and like dead IMO haha, but necessary and useful knowledge - teaches you the basics in design. My advice is to start early. It's a scorable module but depends on how much time you want to spend on it (so start early and familiarize yourself) Bell curve is steep. Got B+ for my 1st NM mod, which i am satisfied but i expected A- though, yep bell curve is steep. The final quiz is just dead memorising which i suck at, i think i did average. I liked this mod, but i wish we can all get Adobe softwares for free so what we learn doesnt go to waste...torrent is quite hard eh for some softwares... OH yup we used Indesign, Photoshop and DreamWeaver (CS6)

GEK1054 Music in Global Context (I forgot hahaha)
Workload: Many mini assignments like 2 concert reviews, group discussion and tutorial journals
Content: Just take it easy and go play play haha. I thought i'd score higher though, guess bell curve is steep here too? sadz. Got B+. I REALLY REALLY LIKED IT COS WE GET TO PLAY INSTRUMENTS EVERY TUTORIAL - South Indian, african, balinese and sundanese gamelan. (3 tut each x 4 types) I destress here every week. Gives me motivation to push on. Haha i spent 1.3k pts on this tho haha B+ is the minimum oh wells. I had fun ;D

KK done! My reviews are much shorter than previous ones cos im lazy.
Anything just leave a comment and i'll get back to you when i check my bloggie haha

Have a blast in summer!

Cheers to Y3 oldie lers :x

This sem taught me very valuable life lessons.
I learn to take things easy, they always turn out better than you think.
I learnt to trust, because i'd rather trust and get hurt, than get hurt because i didn't trust.
I learnt to be myself haha there'd always be weird people who accept you cause we are all weird. Like, its easier for me to open up and talk to people than in the past haha. I think if you asked the Amelia in sec sch or JC she'll never dream of even leading a project bahahaha puberty strikes

I derive my motivation to lead SOCIP from tues and sat sessions, which i why i go down at every opportunity i can. I need to see them to give me that drive to go on, go through all the shit in planning, getting things done, get people moving, making tough decisions -

AND LASTLY

I LOVE MY TEAM. (though i complain about it)
The best thing in life, i feel, is to do the things you like with the people you like. And i'm so glad i'm doing it with you guys. Socisoc peeps, and everyone in the Carnival Planning comm and my friends who i'm gon pull in haha.

And i'm so glad so many people offered to help and encourage us :)

It's really not easy i almost died

But because of that i became stronger haha
